After a tree is removed, the stump left behind is a tripping hazard, a magnet for insects and decay, and an obstacle that prevents you from using your yard the way you want. Arbor Pro’s provides professional stump grinding services across Clearfield County, Centre County, Jefferson County, and Elk County.
How Stump Grinding Works
Stump grinding uses a heavy-duty machine with a rotating carbide-tipped wheel to chip away the stump and its root flare. We grind stumps approximately 18 inches below ground level — deep enough to allow you to fill the area with topsoil and plant grass, install landscaping, or use the space for any purpose. The grinding process produces wood chips and mulch, which we can either spread on-site as ground cover or remove entirely.
Our Equipment
We operate a large commercial-grade stump grinder that handles stumps of all sizes, from small ornamental tree stumps to massive hardwood stumps three feet in diameter or more. Our equipment is powerful enough to complete most residential stumps in under an hour and efficient enough to handle multiple stumps on the same property in a single visit.
Why Stump Grinding Is Better Than Stump Removal
Full stump removal — digging the stump and root ball out of the ground — is invasive, expensive, and leaves a large hole that requires fill dirt and re-grading. Stump grinding achieves the same result with far less disruption to your yard. The stump is reduced to chips below ground level, the surface area is filled and leveled, and your lawn can recover in a few weeks.
When to Grind a Stump
We recommend grinding any stump that is in a visible area of your yard, near a walkway or driveway where it could be a tripping hazard, in an area where you plan to build, plant, or landscape, or attracting insects, fungi, or decay. Stumps can also attract termites and carpenter ants, which can eventually migrate to your home or other structures. Removing the stump eliminates that risk.
Can You Plant Where a Stump Was Ground?
Yes. After the stump is ground 18 inches below grade, the area can be filled with topsoil and seeded with grass, or you can plant a new tree in the same location. We recommend waiting at least a few months before planting a new tree to allow the remaining root material to decompose.
Residential and Commercial Stump Grinding
We provide stump grinding for residential homeowners, commercial properties, HOAs, municipalities, and developers throughout Central Pennsylvania. Whether it’s one stump in a front yard or fifty stumps on a cleared commercial lot, we handle it.
Arbor Pro’s is fully insured and carries workers’ compensation coverage on every job — protecting you from liability if anyone is injured on your property during the work.
